Why nutrition is the other half of surgery
Bariatric surgery is a powerful tool for weight loss — but it's only half the equation. Without a structured dietary protocol, patients risk malnutrition, dumping syndrome, and weight regain. At Sehat+, we've worked alongside Pune's leading bariatric surgeons to develop a clear, four-stage pathway.
The four stages
Stage 1: Clear liquids (Days 1–2)
Water, clear broths, sugar-free drinks. Small sips, never gulps. The goal is hydration while the surgical site heals.
Stage 2: Full liquids (Days 3–14)
Protein shakes, thin dals, buttermilk, strained soups. You need 60–80g of protein daily — supplements are essential at this stage.
Stage 3: Soft foods (Weeks 3–6)
Scrambled eggs, paneer, well-cooked vegetables, dal-rice (small portions). Chew thoroughly — 20+ chews per bite. Eat slowly — 30 minutes per meal.
Stage 4: Regular diet (Week 7 onwards)
Gradually reintroduce normal foods. Prioritise protein at every meal. Avoid sugar, fried foods, and carbonated drinks permanently.
Common mistakes we see
1. Skipping protein targets: Leads to muscle loss and hair fall
2. Drinking with meals: Fills the small stomach pouch with liquid instead of nutrition
3. Returning to old habits: Surgery changes your stomach, not your mind
4. Ignoring supplements: B12, iron, calcium, and vitamin D are non-negotiable for life
The long-term picture
Successful bariatric patients don't just follow a diet — they build a new relationship with food. Smaller portions, mindful eating, regular blood work, and ongoing nutritionist support are what separate patients who maintain their results from those who don't.
At Sehat+, we provide lifelong follow-up for our bariatric patients. Because the surgery is a beginning, not an ending.
